Although I’m not a ten year veteran with a party hat, I’m happy to say I’ve been a player for over 5 years. And, while it isn’t really anything to boast about, I’ve been through quite a bit of the development of the game.
Though I didn’t complain about the old combat system I was more than happy to see the arrival of EoC and the changes to the combat system that happened thereafter (although of course there has been some rough times). Then suddenly, boom, Legacy Mode is coming to RuneScape. Wait what? Jagex is bringing back the combat which they worked so hard to remove a few years ago? Yes some would call that ‘Jagex logic’, but I wasn’t so sure. To be honest I thought it was a mistake. I liked EoC, others liked it, others hated it, but overall it worked. Now RuneScape is spending countless development hours working to restore a previous version of the combat system. To pretty much any gaming company this doesn’t make sense.
It wasn’t until the release of the beta when I finally saw the complete logic behind Legacy Mode. Jagex has outsmarted me once again.
But still… Legacy Mode is absurd.
1- RuneScape a few years ago spent countless hours working to completely, completely, overhaul and remake the combat system. Pretty much everything about it changed and the whole process threw the community into chaos. Some loved it. Some hated it. And others wrote death threats. However, a few years later the wounds have healed for most people and all the ‘Pre-EoC Petition Version 41251’ threads have dried up.
Then suddenly they announce and then poll a release of the older combat system. Basically they are making backward progress, working on a combat system they worked so hard to move away from. A combat system that didn’t make sense and didn’t flow well. But here it is end of June and its already in pre-release beta.
2- This update isn’t removing EoC. It’ll work side by side with the new combat system, allowing players to choose their preference of combat. The fact that both these combat systems will have to be balanced out to work with each other is absurd. Basically you’re trying to get a commercial level polished combat system to work with a completely outdated combat system from 3 years ago. People just don’t do that. Gaming companies don’t do this. Its almost comic, the entire idea behind this Legacy Mode and the way it’ll work.
3- Player Killing is back. That’s right, that little nitch of the game. The unspoken dos and don’ts of pking and its entire heritage is returning. I don’t fully understand some of these things, but certainly appreciate seeing them back in the game.
4- The absurdity of Legacy Mode is that…. its working, and working unbelievably well. This is the true craziness behind Legacy Mode, the most absurd, humorous, and relieving aspect behind it. Its working. Legacy Mode is working.
I look at the official RuneScape forums nearly everyday. Part of my responsibility I have in my clan is to try and find new members for the clan and encourage others to join. So I spend the majority of my time in the ‘Looking For Clan’ section of the forums. Most of the people who post in this section of the forums are either returning to the game after a lengthy period of time or just joined RuneScape as a new player. While not alot of traffic goes through this section of the forums, I get a special understanding of why people are returning to the game (or joining the game) which nearly everyone else is overlooking. And ever since about mid March more and more players are stating that they are returning to the game because of the Legacy Mode. Countless posts are saying this.
Then beta confirmed all of this. The other day I bumbled into the beta looking to just mess around with some special attacks and maybe relearn, just barely, pking. And I was met with a wall of overly enthusiastic players in Edgeville: buying, selling, spamming, trolling, scamming, it was the Edgeville of 4 years ago.
When pking left Edgeville with the release of EoC it left a huge empty hole. Something that only the players of that time will notice. Pretty much the entire purpose of that town was to serve players who looked to make bank and lose bank in the Wilderness. Player Killing in RuneScape is one of the most unique factors of the game. The mechanics and rewards/tribulations behind RuneScape pking is unmatched by any other game. When EoC was released the combat was way too fast paced for pking, it either made the fight extremely easy or extremely hard. Everyone lost interest.
But now, Legacy Mode is hoping to change that. And so far, its working. You really have to give props to Jagex; they realized the issue and then decided to fix it, even though it meant contradicting themselves. While I’ll probably rarely use it, I hope that Legacy Mode works for RuneScape outside of beta. And I hope that other players will realize the commitment Jagex made with this to the players.
Because while Legacy Mode is still absurd. It works and people love it.
